We are seeking a Compliance Engineer to lead our product safety, regulatory compliance, and functional safety efforts. This is a critical hands-on role for someone who thrives in a startup environment and is excited to define and implement compliance frameworks from the ground up. This role may also act as the Functional Safety Manager (FSM) as needed, supporting internal safety processes and third-party certification efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Define and maintain internal compliance procedures aligned with relevant product safety, functional safety, and regulatory standards.
  • Lead product safety reviews and ensure adherence to relevant electrical safety, EMC, and environmental standards.
  • Coordinate third-party compliance testing and manage relationships with certification bodies and consultants.
  • Prepare and submit compliance documentation packages for certifications.

Functional Safety Support

  • Support the development and implementation of functional safety processes across hardware and firmware.
  • Conduct hazard and risk analyses (FMEA, HAZOP) and support mitigation planning.
  • Maintain traceability between safety requirements, design artifacts, and test results.
  • Contribute to the creation of safety-related deliverables including:
  • Safety requirement specifications
  • Validation plans and protocols
  • Safety manuals and installation guidelines

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with hardware, firmware, mechanical, and systems teams to ensure that safety and compliance requirements are built into the product from concept through release.
  • Provide guidance on material selection, insulation, grounding, and creepage/clearance requirements.
  • Help enforce documentation control and internal reviews for all compliance-relevant work products.

Internal Enablement

  • Assist in building the internal compliance infrastructure, including templates, training material, and audit processes.
  • Educate engineers on relevant standards, safety principles, and documentation best practices.
  • Support internal audits and technical file preparation for new product development.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5–8 years of experience in compliance, safety engineering, or regulatory roles in electronics, power systems, or embedded product environments.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards (IEC 61508) and regulatory frameworks (UL/CSA, UL, CE marking).
  • Experience working with third-party labs and safety certification processes is required.
  • Formal training or certification in functional safety (e.g., TÜV Functional Safety Engineer) is an asset, but not required.

Technical & Process Skills

  • Solid understanding of product safety standards.
  • Hands-on experience performing or supporting:
  • Hazard analysis (FMEA, HAZOP)
  • EMC and electrical safety testing
  • Creation of compliance and technical documentation
  • Familiarity with low-voltage, high-voltage, and high-current power systems, PCB-level safety practices, and embedded systems design constraints.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex safety and compliance topics clearly.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
