GHGSat offers greenhouse gas detection, measurement, and monitoring services to industrial and government customers around the world. Our company uses its own satellites and aircraft sensors, combined with third-party data, to help industrial emitters better understand, control, and mitigate their emissions.

GHGSat’s capability is unique: we provide high-resolution, local measurements of atmospheric methane concentration from space and from airborne platforms. This enables us to identify & locate greenhouse gas emitters and to visualize and quantify their emissions.

GHGSat’s airborne instruments and all airborne operations are based out of our Calgary office. The airborne instruments are installed in various small fixed-wing airplanes.

As the demand for our airborne services increases, we are looking to add support to our airborne team. Reporting to the Manager of Airborne Systems, the Airborne Operations Specialist Contractor will work closely with the Calgary team to perform airborne data collection using GHGSat’s airborne instruments which are installed in small fixed-wing airplanes conducting airborne campaigns. You can expect to be working in the field (Canada, US, and internationally) during aerial campaigns lasting for 2 – 4 weeks at a time. While deployed, you will be expected to work weekends if the conditions are adequate for data collection. You will also support other aspects of an airborne campaigns including preparing the equipment before a project, flight planning, installation & system checks, and data organization & validation. You must be confident flying in small aircraft and be able to manage the challenges and responsibilities of field work. We also require someone who can effectively work independently as well as in close collaboration with a team. This is a temporary position that will end on August 31, 2023.


Duties:

  • Airborne operator of GHGSat airborne instruments.
  • Installation of equipment into varying aircraft.
  • Validating equipment installation and testing system functionality.
  • Coordinating mobilization activities with aircraft providers.
  • Operating & acquiring data during flight operations.
  • Field QA/QC of acquired data. Data includes imagery and inertial/GNSS data.
  • Flight planning support.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Interest in aviation and remote sensing.
  • Strong communication skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to make robust decisions during field operations.
  • Have a valid passport.
  • Be available for field work and travel (Canada, USA, and international) for 2 to 4 weeks at a time.
  • Must be able to obtain Canadian Controlled Goods security clearance.

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, geography or relevant.
  • 1+ years’ experience working on technical field projects.
  • Experience working in airplanes or helicopters is an asset.
  • Experience in Linux operating systems is an asset.
  • Data processing, remote sensing/GIS experience, or electronics experience is an asset.
