Who we are

Employment Hero is on a mission to make employment easier and more valuable for everyone. Our Employment Operating System brings hiring, HR, payroll and benefits into an all-in-one solution.

Since our inception in 2014, we’ve scaled to a $2 billion valuation and gained a presence in 6 countries globally - Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and Canada. We now service over 300,000 businesses and more than 2 million employees.

The EH Way

At Employment Hero, we’re proud of our unique DNA, which we call The EH Way.

  1. We are Mission First - everything we do (from what we work on, to how we allocate capital and where we focus) is driven by our Mission
  2. We are Remote First - we champion a remote environment with a preference for asynchronous communication and a high degree of autonomy
  3. We are AI First - we are committed to using AI to accelerate our mission; AI is not just a tool, it’s a fundamental part of how we operate, innovate, and scale
  4. We are Apolitical - we do not take a position on political or social topics, unless it relates to our Mission
  5. We Live by Our Values - we role model our values 100% of the time
  6. We Expect High Performance - we set a high standard and we’re not satisfied with being average

This role

We are looking for a skilled and forward-thinking Infrastructure Architect to join our Architecture team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, reviewing, and evolving secure, scalable, and resilient infrastructure solutions with a strong focus on AWS cloud environments and containerised workloads. You will play a pivotal role in shaping our technical direction, collaborating closely with Application Security and DevOps teams to ensure our platforms meet the highest standards for performance, reliability, and security. You will work alongside an existing Infrastructure Architect within the team, with both roles bringing complementary strengths — the existing architect with a deeper focus on network and platform architecture, and this role bringing specialist expertise in AWS ECS, containerisation, and application-layer infrastructure. The two roles are expected to collaborate closely, share knowledge, and provide input into each other’s designs, with the existing architect offering guidance drawn from their experience in the organisation.

As an Infrastructure Architect, you will be involved in:

    Infrastructure Design & Architecture

    • Lead the design of new cloud infrastructure solutions on AWS, ensuring alignment with scalability, security, and reliability requirements.
    • Architect and document containerised workload platforms using AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) and AWS ECS (Elastic Container Service) on Linux.
    • Develop and maintain architecture blueprints, decision records (ADRs), and reference architectures.
    • Define infrastructure standards, patterns, and guardrails to guide engineering teams.

    Review & Continuous Improvement

    • Conduct architecture reviews of existing systems and infrastructure, identifying risks, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Drive the evolution of legacy infrastructure toward modern, cloud-native patterns.
    • Evaluate and recommend new tools, services, and approaches to improve infrastructure maturity.
    • Ensure infrastructure designs comply with internal security policies and industry best practices.

    Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Partner with Application Security teams to embed security-by-design principles throughout infrastructure architecture.
    • Work closely with DevOps teams on platform engineering, CI/CD pipeline design, and automation strategies.
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers across architecture and infrastructure topics.
    • Communicate complex infrastructure concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

    Governance & Documentation

    • Maintain and improve architecture governance processes, including design reviews and approval workflows.
    • Produce high-quality documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and technical specifications.
    • Contribute to the Architecture team's knowledge base and communities of practice.

Who you are

To thrive at Employment Hero, you’ll need to embody The EH Way - operating with focus, agility, and an obsession with impact. For this role, you’ll also bring

    Required Experience & Skills

    • 5+ years of experience in infrastructure architecture, cloud engineering, or a similar senior technical role.
    • Deep hands-on expertise with AWS services — particularly networking (VPC, Transit Gateway, Route 53), compute (EC2, Fargate), and storage (S3, EBS, EFS).
    • Proven experience designing and operating containerised workloads using AWS EKS and/or AWS ECS on Linux.
    • Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, including cluster architecture, RBAC, networking (CNI plugins), and workload management.
    • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and/or AWS CloudFormation.
    • Understanding of DevSecOps practices and the ability to integrate security controls into infrastructure pipelines.
    • Expertise in deploying Threat Detection & Remediation tooling within an AWS environment. The ability to enforce security guardrails across multi-account environments, and a deep knowledge of IAM, Compliance & Monitoring
    • Experience with CI/CD tooling (e.g. GitHub Actions) and GitOps workflows.
    • Solid Linux systems administration skills.

    Highly Regarded

    • AWS certifications (e.g. Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional, Security Specialty).
    • Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g. Istio, AWS Service Connect).
    • Familiarity with observability tooling (e.g. Datadog, AWS CloudWatch).
    • Experience working in regulated industries (e.g. financial services, healthcare) with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, or PCI-DSS.
    • Background working in an Architecture chapter or Centre of Excellence (CoE) function.

    Personal Attributes

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset — you enjoy decomposing complex problems into elegant solutions.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, compelling architecture documentation.
    • Collaborative by nature — you build effective working relationships across engineering, security, and product teams.
    • Pragmatic and delivery-focused, balancing technical idealism with real-world constraints.
    • A continuous learner who stays current with cloud and infrastructure trends.
