Job Description:
Equity Research provides institutional investors with independent, in-depth analysis of publicly-traded companies across multiple sectors. Our team produces differentiated views, financial and valuation models, and publishes research that inform investment decisions. As an Associate in Equity Research, you will have an opportunity to work directly with an equity analyst on the daily publication of company and industry research reports. You will hone research skills, gain detailed understanding of the sectors covered, and obtain insight into the institutional equities business.
The Consumer Associate will collaborate with the senior analyst to deliver comprehensive, insight-driven research on a diverse coverage universe across the staples and discretionary sub-sectors. The role requires versatility—balancing the defensive, margin-focused nature of Staples with the more cyclical, consumer-sentiment-driven dynamics of Discretionary coverage. A strong candidate will combine reliable financial modeling skills with genuine curiosity about consumer behaviour, brand positioning, and competitive dynamics.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain detailed financial models (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, segment-level revenue builds, and same-store-sales frameworks) for consumer staples and discretionary companies.
- Analyze industry trends including consumer spending patterns, pricing/promotional environments, input cost trajectories, channel shifts (e.g., e-commerce penetration), and demographic tailwinds or headwinds.
- Conduct competitive positioning assessments, evaluating brand strength, market share trends, and management execution across coverage names.
- Draft and contribute to initiation reports, quarterly earnings previews/reviews, sector strategy notes, and thematic deep dives with growing editorial ownership.
- Monitor and interpret relevant data sources and indicators where applicable.
- Support marketing efforts including client calls, non-deal roadshows, and conference participation; field client inquiries on coverage.
- Stay current on regulatory and ESG developments relevant to consumer companies, including labelling requirements, sustainability commitments, and supply chain transparency.
- Advance into greater research ownership, client responsibilities, and published contributions in line with demonstrated capability and growth objectives.
- Ability to work independently under strict deadlines, with an attention to detail and output orientation
- Strong work ethic and ability to take initiative, ability to balance multiple tasks
- Superior business writing skills, presentation skills, and interpersonal skills
- Flexibility and ability to invest long hours as needed/required by business due to nature of the role
Educational Assets:
- Strong preference for finance and business qualifications – must be comfortable working with financial statements
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and/or CA/CPA is an asset
- Experience in equity research or a related discipline is an asset
- Comfort with and enthusiasm for leveraging available AI tools in research workflows, including a working knowledge of effective prompting techniques, is considered a strong asset
