Department Overview
The Treasury and Balance Sheet Management (TBSM) function is responsible for managing market and liquidity risks across TD’s domestic and international banking operations.
The Insurance Investment Management team oversees the strategy, governance, and reporting of investment portfolios supporting TD’s General Insurance, Life and Health, and Reinsurance businesses, with approximately $9 billion.
Role Overview
This Senior Manager role provides strategic leadership and technical expertise across TD’s insurance investment portfolios. The position is responsible for shaping investment strategy, optimizing portfolio construction, strengthening investment governance, and supporting effective decision‑making across the insurance businesses. The role works closely with senior stakeholders and governance committees and plays a key role in advancing portfolio performance, capital efficiency, and risk management.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide senior‑level investment thought leadership, contributing to strategic direction, portfolio construction, and long‑term insurance investment initiatives.
- Lead the optimization of insurance investment portfolios, evaluating risk‑return tradeoffs, capital efficiency, liquidity resilience, and alignment with liability and regulatory characteristics.
- Research, evaluate, and implement new asset classes and investment strategies, including development of approval recommendations and establishment of appropriate governance, portfolio guidelines, performance measurements, and reporting frameworks.
- Own investment policy governance documentation, encompassing the development, interpretation, and maintenance of credit limit frameworks and Statements of Investment Policies and Procedures.
- Serve as a key point of contact for stakeholders, clearly communicating insurance investment strategy, performance, and risk considerations to executive management and investment committees.
- Build strong cross‑functional relationships with actuarial, finance, risk, capital management, and business teams, as well as with external managers and advisors.
- Provide subject matter expertise on insurance investment accounting and financial reporting, including review and challenge of investment results, valuation approaches, and disclosures, in support of accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Prepare and present high‑quality investment materials and recommendations for senior stakeholders and governance forums, ensuring clarity, analytical rigor, and alignment with strategic objectives.
- Oversee portfolio management activities, including portfolio rebalancing, investment and risk reporting, net investment income forecasting, and other ongoing business processes.
- Contribute to broader organizational responsibilities, including compliance, regulatory engagement, and financial reporting processes.
Specific Educational Requirements and Accreditations:
- Professional investment or risk designation (e.g., CFA, FRM, CAIA) or equivalent institutional investment experience required.
- Additional actuarial credentials (e.g., FSA or ASA) are considered an asset.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- 10+ years of institutional investment experience, including insurance investment portfolio management, asset‑liability management, and balance‑sheet investing.
- Experience overseeing multi‑asset insurance portfolios, with a focus on risk‑return trade‑offs, capital efficiency, liquidity, and liability alignment.
- Experience with investment governance, including investment policies and Board or investment committee reporting in a regulated environment.
- Strong ability to partner with Actuarial, Finance, Risk, and Capital Management teams, including oversight of investment reporting and controls.
- Proven ability to communicate insurance investment strategy, performance, and risks to senior executives and governance forums.
Work activities include a blend of highly collaborative activities and individual deliverables. Individuals are expected to be onsite 4 days a week. Colleagues may spend more or less days in office as required by the business line.
