Job Description
Reporting to the AVP, External Counsel Performance, the Senior Counsel is responsible for driving the strategic oversight, governance, and performance optimization of external legal service providers. This role is critical to advancing consistency, cost discipline, and performance excellence across the external counsel panel. It focuses on supporting litigation outcomes, improving cycle times, and driving disciplined legal spend management.
The role acts as a key advisor to Claims, Legal, and Vendor Management stakeholders, ensuring alignment with litigation strategy and operational priorities.
Main Responsibilities
Develop and execute strategies to optimize external counsel performance improving cycle times, and cost efficiency.
Monitor adherence to litigation strategy, billing discipline, and service expectations.
Provide strategic guidance on complex matters through file review.
Establish governance frameworks, referral protocols, and performance scorecards.
Conduct file audits and identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
Develop KPIs and reporting dashboards.
Drive legal spend reduction through budgeting, billing oversight, and disciplined management.
Ensure adherence to billing guidelines and support invoice review processes.
Manage relationships with external counsel firms.
Identify opportunities to leverage data, automation, and AI.
Contribute to development of AI-enabled tools and strategies.
Job Requirements
LLB or JD and member in good standing with a law society in Canada.
10+ years of in-house or external insurance defense litigation experience.
Strong understanding of litigation strategy and legal operations.
Knowledge of legal and court documents and procedures.
Knowledge of standard office equipment and word processing.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Excellent drafting skills and eye for detail.
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work productively under pressure and deliver business results.
Strong interpersonal & client service skills; professional and positive demeanor.
Superior organization & priority setting skills, strong work ethic and ability to multi-task.
Conceptual and creative problem-solving skills.
