About People & Culture

People are the key to MaRS' ability to execute on our vision, mission and values. The P&C team partners with our leaders to build the systems, processes and teams that allow MaRS to scale, which will ultimately bring our vision, mission and values to reality.

About the role

The Interim Vice President of People and Culture works with MaRS’ senior leaders and their teams to enable MaRS’ strategy. The Vice President, People and Culture, plays a key role in shaping the organization's people strategy, coaching senior leaders, and supporting programs to foster a high impact, values driven culture.

Reporting to the CEO, this role is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and reports to the Board of Directors through the Governance and Human Resources Committee. This role leads the People and Culture function and is responsible for P&C Business Partners, Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards and People Experience Programs, HRIS, Payroll and Operations, and plays a key role providing coaching to senior leaders to enhance effectiveness.

This role is currently a 12-month fixed term contract with an opportunity for permanent employment at the completion.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership: 40%

  • Responsible for enabling the organization’s strategy through effective decision making and governance through their role on the senior leadership team.
  • Leads a team of high performing and highly engaged P&C professionals who provide the organization with advice, progressive people programs and support. The People and Culture team includes – Senior Director of People Experience, two Senior P&C Business Partners, Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition, Senior Associate, People and Culture and two P&C Program Managers.
  • Manages the P&C budget to be within plan.

Business Partner: 25%

  • Project manage the transition of MaRS’ CEO in partnership with the HR Governance Committee of the Board of Directors by December 31, 2023 then plan and lead an effective onboarding experience.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor and coach to the CEO and senior leadership to understand their business strategies, then identify the people implications and effective leadership and people strategies required to enable business outcomes.
  • Coaches and supports a team of P&C Business partners to manage organizational design, workforce planning and employee relations.

People Programs: 25%

  • Oversees the program management and continuous improvement of innovative people programs focused on building a high impact and values driven culture, including:
  • Continuous Listening and Employee Experience
  • Performance Enablement – Check-ins and Year End Reflection
  • Total Rewards – base pay, incentive, benefits, wellness
  • Recognition & Milestones
  • Learning and Development
  • Leadership Development

People and Culture Operations: 10%

  • Leads the team who manages the day-to-day people operations including: Payroll, Benefits administration, HRIS and analytics with a constant focus on automation and process simplification.
  • Oversees P&C data and analytics to have an objective, fact base for decision making
  • Ensures legislative compliance with progressive P&C policies.
  • Leads and is an escalation point for several vendors and contract negotiations (e.g. BambooHR, Pivotal Payroll. Canada Life, League, Morneau Shepell, RBC, Mercer).

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in business, HR, or psychology
  • Accredited Coaching designation
  • Master’s degree – MIRHR, MBA, etc. and/or CHRP/CHRL, an asset
  • 15+ years working in People and Culture with deep domain knowledge in talent management, total rewards, talent acquisition, performance management, employee relations, engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, etc.

Salary Range: $167,000 - $195,000, benefits and paid time-off.
