About Ventures & Ecosystems Group (V&E)
This role resides within the V&E group at MaRS. V&E works with over 1400 innovation-driven science and technology startups. V&E helps entrepreneurs commercialize innovations with high business growth potential in Canada and globally by facilitating access to the customer, talent, funding, marketing and stakeholder connections required to successfully scale their business.
About the role
The Junior Analyst, Benchmarking and Insights, is responsible for collecting, maintaining, and analyzing both venture and market data to support the B&I team in providing accurate reporting to stakeholders in government and across the organization. The Junior Analyst will also play a key role in administering the Benchmarking Service, involving data collection from ventures, administering database access, and addressing venture questions.
Key Responsibilities
DATA COLLECTION & MAINTENANCE
- Responsible for collecting, organizing, and maintaining venture data from various internal and external sources, including manual data entry and cleaning as required.
- Flag data challenges, e.g. areas where we lack data, collect duplicate data, or where data is unreliable, out-of-date, etc.
- Correspond within the Benchmarking & Insights team and with other relevant stakeholders (e.g. Program teams, vendors) to relay pertinent data
BENCHMARKING SERVICE SUPPORT
- Assists with implementation of new tools, including tasks such as account creation, scheduling, data deadline reminders, data entry, creation of quarterly checklists, etc.
- Collaborates with teams across Ventures & Ecosystems to ensure excellent and timely venture communications and smooth delivery of the Benchmarking Service
- Participates in the improvement of the service by collecting, summarizing, and communicating program team and venture feedback, collaborating with vendors to fix
RESEARCH REPORT ASSEMBLY AND DEVELOPMENT
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to compose or assemble written reports, slides, or data visualizations to provide insights on the venture portfolio or innovation ecosystem.
- Pulls data and performs analyses to enable program reporting and insights, utilizing strong data management techniques
Qualifications:
- Completed undergraduate degree
- Familiarity with cleaning and working with data in Excel or Google Sheets
- High proficiency with data visualization in Excel or Google Sheets
- Excellent verbal, communication, and presentation skills
- Strong quantitative and qualitative research capabilities
- Experience with VC and startup databases such as PitchBook, CB Insights, Crunchbase, an asset
- Experience with Salesforce, Tableau, Looker, PowerBI, Adobe InDesign, and Illustrator, an asset
Salary Range: $49,800 - $62,000, up to 10% discretionary incentive, benefits, and paid time-off.
