About the Position
The Senior Associate, Investments plays a key role in executing IAF’s early-stage venture investment strategy. The role spans the full investment lifecycle, from sourcing and evaluating opportunities to managing portfolio performance and fund operations, helping ensure that IAF identifies exceptional founders and deploys capital with rigor and impact.


Key Responsibilities
Investment Sourcing and Evalutation

  • Proactively source high-potential early-stage technology companies through founder outreach, ecosystem engagement, and participation in industry and community events.
  • Screen inbound opportunities and referrals, assess strategic fit with IAF’s investment focus, and evaluate companies through early-stage diligence to inform investment decisions.


Due Diligence and Transaction Execution

  • Lead analytical and coordination aspects of the due diligence process, engaging internal and external experts as required.
  • Conduct market and financial analysis, including valuation, market sizing, and competitive assessments, to support investment recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed investment memos and presentations for new opportunities, and coordinate with external legal counsel to ensure timely and accurate completion of transactions.


Portfolio Monitoring and Value Creation

  • Monitor portfolio company performance through regular engagement and reporting, attending board meetings in an observer role as needed.
  • Proactively support portfolio companies where skillsets align, and leverage the broader MaRS ecosystem to connect them with strategic, operational, and talent resources that drive growth beyond capital.

Investment Operations and Reporting

  • Maintain organized, accurate records across the investment pipeline and portfolio.
  • Support quarterly portfolio reviews and reporting by preparing summary analyses and materials.
  • Ensure all post-closing documentation, data, and records are up to date to support internal reporting and audit requirements.

Market Intelligence and Ecosystem Engagement

  • Build and maintain sector knowledge to inform investment theses and identify emerging opportunities.
  • Represent IAF within the startup ecosystem through events, accelerators, and investor networks to strengthen deal flow, brand visibility, and partnerships.
  • Share insights and feedback from market engagement to inform IAF’s investment theses and strategic priorities.
  • Contribute to thought leadership and community-building initiatives that reinforce IAF’s position as a leading early-stage investor in Ontario.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced education or professional designation (e.g., CFA, CBV, CPA, or equivalent) an asset.
  • 3–6 years of experience in venture capital, private equity, corporate development, consulting, or another analytical or strategic role involving investment, innovation, or business growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently build and interpret financial models and apply structured analysis to support investment decisions.
  • Direct experience assessing early-stage technology companies, including market analysis, business model evaluation, or diligence support on investment transactions.
  • Practical understanding of early-stage financing, capitalization structures, and investor dynamics, with exposure to founders, co-investors, or ecosystem partners.
  • Strong financial modeling, valuation, and analytical skills, with the ability to translate data into clear insights and recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to synthesize complex information for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational discipline and ability to manage multiple concurrent investment processes.
  • Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and collaborative working style.
  • Familiarity with venture transaction documentation and legal processes.
  • Experience using CRM or market intelligence tools (e.g., Salesforce, PitchBook, Affinity, Carta).
  • Curiosity and adaptability across diverse technology and market sectors.
  • Initiative to improve processes and contribute to platform or program innovation within the fund.

Compensation: $90,000 - $115,000, up to a 10% discretionary incentive, extended healthcare benefits, lifestyle spending account, GRRSP matching, and paid time-off.
