Role Overview:
The Director, Finance Operations & Controller is responsible for leading the organization’s accounting operations, financial close processes, controllership activities, and financial compliance functions. Reporting to the VP Finance, this role oversees the day-to-day accounting operations of the business and ensures the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting across the organization.
This role plays a critical leadership position within the Finance function, supporting scalable growth through strong financial controls, operational excellence, process improvement, and cross-functional collaboration. The Director will lead core accounting operations including month-end close, accounts payable, account reconciliations, audit coordination, tax compliance, and ERP-related finance initiatives.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on finance leader with strong technical accounting expertise, operational rigor, and experience building efficient finance processes within dynamic, high-growth environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Close Management
- Lead and oversee the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to ensure timely, accurate, and complete financial reporting
- Oversee the preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting working papers
- Ensure the completeness and accuracy of financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards (IFRS and/or GAAP)
- Review financial results and support variance analysis for Finance leadership and operational stakeholders
- Maintain strong balance sheet integrity through disciplined reconciliation and review processes
- Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, procedures, and reporting requirements
Controllership & Internal Controls
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure integrity of financial reporting
- Develop, implement, and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and governance frameworks
- Ensure compliance with applicable financial, tax, and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate and manage external audit activities, including preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation
- Support internal audit and compliance initiatives as required
- Identify financial and operational risks and implement appropriate mitigation controls
Finance Operations
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including accounts payable, expense management, and general accounting functions
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of vendor invoices, payments, and related reconciliations
- Monitor operational accounting workflows to improve efficiency, scalability, and accuracy
- Lead initiatives focused on process optimization, automation, and continuous improvement within the Finance function
- Support the implementation, enhancement, and ongoing optimization of ERP systems and finance-related technologies
- Develop scalable finance processes and operational best practices to support organizational growth
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance operations team
- Establish clear goals, performance expectations, and development plans for team members
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance team culture
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention of finance team talent
- Promote continuous learning and operational excellence across the department
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee Canadian corporate tax compliance activities including preparation and review of tax filings, elections, and supporting schedules
- Coordinate with external tax advisors and regulatory authorities as required
- Support quarterly tax provisions, tax reconciliations, and tax-related financial reporting requirements
- Assist with responses to CRA and provincial tax authority inquiries and audits
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of all required corporate filings and remittances
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Collaborate with Finance leadership and operational stakeholders to support business objectives and organizational growth
- Partner with business and support departments to review monthly financial results, accruals, and prepaid balances
- Support FP&A, budgeting, forecasting, and operational reporting activities as required
- Provide financial insights and operational support to improve decision-making and business performance
- Support finance integration and operational readiness activities related to acquisitions and strategic growth initiatives
Process Improvement & Systems
- Serve as a key finance lead in ERP implementation and finance transformation initiatives
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting operations through automation and technology enhancements
- Drive standardization and documentation of finance processes and controls
- Support the development of scalable reporting capabilities and financial infrastructure
Qualifications
- University degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- CPA designation required
- Familiarity with U.S. GAAP and cross-border financial reporting considerations considered an asset
- 8+ years of progressive experience in accounting, controllership, or finance operations roles
- Prior experience leading accounting operations and month-end close processes within a dynamic or high-growth environment
- Strong technical accounting knowledge including IFRS and/or GAAP
- Experience with ERP systems, finance transformation initiatives, and process improvement projects
- Experience managing audits, internal controls, and regulatory compliance activities
- Corporate tax experience considered an asset
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
Preferred Experience
- Experience within healthcare, technology, medical device, SaaS, manufacturing, or other regulated industries preferred
- Experience supporting multi-entity or rapidly scaling organizations considered an asset
- Exposure to acquisition integration or corporate growth initiatives preferred
- Experience supporting U.S.-based entities, cross-border finance operations, or U.S. financial reporting requirements preferred
- Familiarity with U.S. GAAP and coordination with U.S. auditors or finance teams considered an asset
