Location: MaRS Centre, Toronto

Department: Drug Discovery

Reports To: Principal Research Scientist & Lab Manager

Salary: Commensurate with level of experience

Hours: 35 hours/week

Job Type: On-site

Status: Full-time, Temporary for six (6) months

Position Summary

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Research Technician I to join the medicinal chemistry team in the Drug Discovery Program. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for compound management, including compound registration, storage, dispensing, and database management. There will also be opportunities for the candidate to support the analytical chemistry group.

The OICR Drug Discovery Program is one of the largest programs of its kind in Canada. Our mission is to help efficiently translate discoveries made in Ontario’s labs into novel oncology therapies. The team is comprised of more than 35 researchers whose collective expertise spans the entire drug discovery process from target identification and validation to clinical candidate selection. The group has extensive drug discovery experience within pharma and biotech environments and combines the disciplines of biology, ADME/PK, analytical, medicinal, and computational chemistry expertise along with state-of-the-art infrastructure necessary to successfully conduct drug discovery projects.

This position is temporary, full-time for six (6) months.

Position Responsibilities

  • Assist in compound management, including compound registration, storage, dispensing, and database management;
  • Prepares samples for biological experiments in the department and at Contract Research Organizations (CROs);
  • Assist in the sourcing and purchasing of specialty chemicals
  • Assist in collecting and storing of compound data;
  • Prepares routine solutions and reagents;
  • Assist analytical chemists in sample preparation and performing routine analysis using various instruments;
  • Maintains laboratory notebook detailing experimental activities, methods, and results;
  • Liaise effectively with multi-disciplinary team members (medicinal, analytical and computational chemists);
  • Adheres to all OICR safety guidelines and policies.

Qualifications

  • BSc in Chemistry or related discipline, or recognized equivalent;
  • Knowledge of general organic chemistry;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience with HPLC and other analytical instruments;
  • Strong team player and excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Highly motivated self-starter that enjoys an element of ambiguity and capable of adapting to a changing environment.
