Descripción completa del empleo
At PhenoTips, we build software to help health systems better diagnose and care for patients with genetic conditions, including rare diseases and hereditary cancer risk. Backed by top Canadian investors and leading healthcare institutions across Canada and the UK, our platform powers genomic medicine for hospitals, clinics, and researchers worldwide.
We are looking for a Product Engineer to lead the design and implementation of a new clinician-facing portal, working at the intersection of product, clinical design, and AI/ML to deliver software that is simple, intuitive, and trustworthy.
You will help develop a new AI-assisted tool that supports clinicians through critical steps in genomic test ordering. You'll work in a two-person R&D pod alongside an AI/ML engineer. You'll own the clinician-facing experience (UI/UX, application logic), and they'll own model development and ML infrastructure. Our broader engineering team of five is focused on the core platform and is available to support you. You'll report to the Head of Product and Engineering.
This is a high-impact role where your engineering judgment and user-centered mindset will directly shape the way genetics is practiced around the world. If you thrive building real products, thinking about the user journey, and want your work to matter, we’d love to hear from you.
Pay range: CA$105,000–$125,000. We understand that compensation is a large factor in evaluating opportunities. This pay range represents our target for the role, and is determined by market data, the planned responsibilities, and internal equity. Offers are usually near the midpoint, but the final amount may be adjusted based on your experience and skills.
Seniority
We care more about what you've accomplished than how many years you've been doing it. What matters is that you can drive the end-to-end design and implementation of a clinician workflow tool: making the architectural calls, owning the user experience, and shipping reliably in a clinical setting.
Your role:
Building great clinician tools
- Lead the design and build of clinician-facing features end to end, from frontend UI through to backend logic and ML model integration. Work closely with engineering, product, and clinical subject matter experts.
- Work alongside health system design partners and internal subject matter experts to test and iterate on UI/UX, keeping the user experience simple and ergonomic for busy clinicians.
- Integrate internal AI/ML models that surface meaningful suggestions to clinicians and ensure data is collected and managed safely in alignment with applicable health data regulations including PIPEDA, PHIPA, and PHIA.
Shipping with quality
- Actively engage with end users, conduct usability testing, and iterate to raise the bar on product quality over time.
- Write clean, well-tested, and documented code, applying strong engineering judgment to ensure reliability in a clinical setting where the stakes are high.
Our stack
Most of your initial work will be frontend, where we use TypeScript and React. For backend work on this project, JavaScript, Python, or Java are options. Our core platform runs on a Java backend, and over time there's an opportunity to grow into Java and contribute to the shared backend.
What You Bring
We value continuous learning and potential. If you don’t meet every requirement listed below but have a passion for technology, a desire to grow, and believe you would be a strong fit for the role, we still encourage you to apply:
- Demonstrated experience building and shipping real products in production settings, with a track record of end-to-end ownership.
- The judgment and autonomy to lead a product area: making architectural decisions, prioritizing tradeoffs, and iterating based on user feedback without close supervision.
- Comfortable shipping code with AI development tools, with the judgment to know when the model is wrong.
- User-centered mindset: you’re comfortable talking to users, observing how they work, and iterating quickly on what you see.
- Strong attention to detail and an eye for design that keeps the end-user experience front of mind.
- TypeScript and React experience preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally with product, clinical, and ML teams.
Bonus Points
- Background or experience in health software, bioinformatics, or genetics.
- Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR) or electronic health record integrations.
- Experience working with or evaluating ML/LLM outputs in a production setting.
- Java experience, or interest in growing into backend work on our core platform.
Benefits and Perks
- Comprehensive health, drug, and dental coverage, plus a Health Spending Account and a Personal Wellness/Productivity fund to use on what matters most to you.
- We are a primarily remote-first team with flexible schedules. We value outcomes over clock-punching, and support genuine work-life balance.
- A $500 stipend to help ensure you have a comfortable and ergonomic home setup.
- Paid vacation, personal/sick days, and our favorite: extended long weekends throughout the summer.
- We get together for annual company retreats to bond, brainstorm, and celebrate our wins in person.
- The opportunity to own a piece of what you’re building through our Stock Option plan.
