Senior Manager, Engineering - AI Services
Software Engineering, Data Science
San Mateo, CA, USA
USD 177k-296k / year
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
Lead and grow multiple AI Services engineering pods, providing clear direction, coaching, and career development for engineers across all levels.
Champion the effective use of AI coding tools across your pods, modeling how engineering teams can dramatically accelerate their own productivity.
Set expectations, give regular feedback, and manage performance to build high-performing, inclusive, and accountable teams.
Partner with senior engineers and architects to guide technical and architectural decisions for AI platform services — including LLM integrations, agentic frameworks, RAG pipelines, and MCP servers — focusing on scalability, reliability, and security.
Collaborate closely with Product Management, Security, and other engineering leaders to align the AI Services roadmap with business and customer needs.
Own end-to-end delivery for the AI Services organization — from planning and prioritization through execution, rollout, and ongoing improvement.
Proactively identify risks, remove blockers, and ensure your pods consistently meet agreed SLAs/SLOs and quality standards.
Foster a culture of curiosity, continuous improvement, and psychological safety where engineers are encouraged to experiment, learn, and grow.
Required Qualifications
15+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong background in building SaaS and/or PaaS products at a product company.
Significant experience in people management (typically 6–8+ years), including hiring, performance management, coaching, and career development of software engineers.
Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams or pods, accountable for delivery, reliability, and developer experience.
Demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it to your role — using AI coding tools, agentic workflows, and data-driven insights to drive innovation and productivity.
Familiarity with the AI/ML platform space, including Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, AI agents, and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Earlier-career hands-on programming experience in one or more of Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python, and still comfortable reviewing code, discussing design trade-offs, and engaging meaningfully on technical proposals.
Deep understanding of SaaS architectures on public cloud (preferably AWS), including multi-tenant, highly available, and secure systems.
Strong experience with CI/CD and platform tooling such as Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and build trust with engineers, peers, and senior stakeholders.
A calm, pragmatic leadership style under pressure, with a strong bias for action and continuous improvement.
