Software Engineer II
Software Engineering
Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Job Description
What you’ll do
Design, implement, and maintain high-quality, scalable features for Guidewire’s cloud-based platform and InsuranceSuite applications using Java and Gosu (our JVM-based, statically typed language), with a focus on reliability, performance, and security.
Solve complex business and technical problems by distilling requirements, exploring design options, and delivering pragmatic, production-ready solutions that align with PDO’s priorities around operational excellence and AI-enabled innovation.
Work across the full stack of n-tier web applications, including RESTful services, integration layers, relational databases (JDBC/ORM), and web UI, ensuring robust data models, clean APIs, and resilient system integrations.
Collaborate in an Agile environment using practices such as Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD), pair programming, code reviews, and continuous delivery to evolve our engineering standards and team ways of working.
Write clean, modular, and testable code, including comprehensive unit and integration tests, and actively improve code quality through refactoring, design pattern application, and automation.
Investigate and resolve functional, performance, and scalability issues in production and pre-production environments, using data and observability tools to drive root-cause analysis and continuous improvement.
Mentor and support junior engineers by sharing best practices, giving constructive feedback, and helping them grow their technical and problem-solving skills.
Participate in innovation activities such as hackathons, technical spikes, and internal forums to explore emerging technologies (including cloud and GenAI) that can enhance our platform and customer outcomes, in line with PDO’s GenAI and data adoption goals.
At Guidewire, we foster a culture of curiosity, innovation, and responsible use of AI—empowering our teams to continuously leverage emerging technologies and data-driven insights to enhance productivity and outcomes.
What you’ll bring
Required
Demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it to your current role as well as data-driven insights to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement.
2–5 years of hands-on experience building n-tier web applications using Java-based technologies (for example Java SE/EE, Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate or similar ORM frameworks).
Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design, with the ability to apply design patterns to improve software architecture and maintainability.
Experience with enterprise application development, including relational databases (SQL, JDBC, ORM), data modelling, and integrating systems via messaging and/or RESTful services.
Practical experience with Agile development practices and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., automated builds, tests, deployments) in a fast-paced environment.
Commitment to writing clean, modular, and maintainable code, with solid experience writing unit tests and creating testable components.
Strong analytical and debugging skills, with a structured approach to troubleshooting and resolving production and integration issues.
Preferred
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and an understanding of how cloud-native architectures support scalability, security, and operational efficiency.
Exposure to or interest in learning Gosu or other JVM languages, and familiarity with BDD, pair programming, and test automation frameworks.
Background in software product development (as opposed to purely project-based work), including participation in at least one end-to-end release cycle.
Experience working on AI- or data-driven features (for example, leveraging analytics, GenAI, or recommendation systems) is a plus and aligns with PDO’s focus on embedding AI across the product portfolio.
