Business and People Operations Intern (Summer 2026)

Location: Edmonton, AB

Duration: 4 months, full-time (40 hours per week), with possibility of extension

Start Date: May 1, 2026

Compensation: $25–$28 per hour

Work Arrangement: Onsite, Hybrid

Overview:

PulseMedica is an Edmonton-based ophthalmic medical device company seeking a Business and People Operations Intern to join our team for Summer 2026. This role is based at our Edmonton headquarters and offers hands-on exposure to the operational, people, and business functions of a growing medtech startup.

In this role, you will support a broad range of initiatives across business operations, people operations, marketing, fundraising support, and internal process execution. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and leadership to help maintain and scale the operational systems that support PulseMedica’s growth.

We are looking for a proactive, organized, and adaptable student who is curious about how early-stage companies operate and scale. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, communicates clearly, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

This is an opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on experience across multiple functions while contributing directly to PulseMedica’s mission to transform ophthalmic care.

The Opportunity

The Business and People Operations Intern will support day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives across business operations and people operations (HR). This role provides exposure to marketing, stakeholder reporting, fundraising support, recruitment coordination, internal communications, and operational process improvement.

You will gain insight into how operational, people, and business functions intersect in a regulated, high-growth technology environment and contribute to projects that support both internal teams and company growth.

Responsibilities

  1. Business and Operations Support:
    1. Support day-to-day business operations, including data collection, reporting, and analysis related to company activities, progress metrics, and operational performance.
    2. Assist with the preparation of internal and external reports, presentations, and materials for leadership and stakeholders.
    3. Provide project coordination and execution support across business operations, people operations, and ad hoc initiatives.
  2. Marketing and Communications:
    1. Support the planning and execution of marketing initiatives and digital campaigns to enhance brand visibility and engagement.
    2. Assist with content creation for internal communications, presentations, reports, and multimedia materials.
  3. People Operations and HR Support:
    1. Provide administrative and operational support for people operations, including recruitment coordination, job postings, interview scheduling, candidate communications, and onboarding logistics.
    2. Assist with employee record organization and HR process documentation.
    3. Support employer branding and HR-related initiatives, including careers page updates, recruitment campaigns, and internal culture initiatives.
  4. Process Improvement and Special Projects:
    1. Contribute to workflow automation, process documentation, and operational efficiency initiatives.
    2. Support special projects and cross-functional initiatives as needed, helping to operationalize deliverables and track progress.
    3. Assist with investor and grant research, including tracking funding opportunities, application timelines, and reporting requirements.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in the Haskayne School of Business Undergraduate Co-op Program and meet all eligibility criteria for the Hunter Family WIL Fund through the University of Calgary, including a full-time co-op work term from March to August 2026.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Business, Management, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, Communications, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt to different audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated initiative, adaptability, and collaborative work ethic.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment with competing priorities.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Assets and Preferred Experience

The successful candidate will bring a foundational understanding of business and operations, along with a strong interest in gaining hands-on experience in areas such as marketing, people operations, and internal team support. Success in this role will come from strong organizational and communication skills, curiosity, and comfort working across teams in a fast-paced startup environment.

  • Previous experience in a startup, scale-up, or early-stage company environment.
  • Experience with project coordination, business operations, marketing, or HR-related roles.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, website content management systems, and digital design tools.
  • Experience with project management, CRM, HRIS, ATS, or workflow tools.
  • Strong spreadsheet and data management skills; experience working with operational or financial data is an asset.
  • Interest or experience in recruitment, employer branding, and people operations.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Google Workspace, Slack, Jira, Confluence, HubSpot, Mailchimp, and workflow automation or AI tools is considered an asset.
