Senior Hardware Design Engineer
Location: Ottawa, ON
Department: Research & Development
We are seeking a Senior Hardware Design Engineer to join our R&D team in Ottawa. The successful candidate will play a key role in the architecture, design, validation, and release of advanced hardware systems. This role requires strong technical leadership, hands-on design capability, and the ability to mentor junior team members.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to hardware architecture and system-level design.
- Conduct and participate in peer design reviews.
- Support the development and definition of circuit pack functional requirements.
- Participate in component engineering including component selection, coding, and review.
- Capture detailed circuit-level schematics.
- Perform design simulations and analysis.
- Develop PCB stackups and guide PCB layout efforts.
- Manage and coordinate PCB layout resources.
- Work with high-speed RF transmission lines and high-speed digital interfaces.
- Lead bring-up, debug, and characterization of new designs.
- Mentor and guide junior hardware engineers.
- Author, maintain, and contribute to technical documentation, including:
- Functional Specifications
- Hardware Design Specifications
- Verification Test Plans
- ECO Documentation and Design Release Packages
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline.
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant hardware design experience.
- Proven board-level design experience including:
- High-speed digital circuit design
- Analog circuit design
- Power supply / power management design
- Processor and microcontroller interfaces
- Clock distribution
- FPGA-based designs
- Experience with thermal management in hardware systems.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC design principles and compliance processes.
- Experience with schematic capture tools (OrCAD).
- Experience with PCB layout tools (Cadence Allegro).
- Strong signal integrity analysis experience.
- Experience with hardware tracking, validation, and testing processes.
- Proficiency with lab characterization equipment:
- Oscilloscopes, DVMs, Spectrum Analyzers, Optical test equipment
- Hands-on troubleshooting skills and practical lab experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Strong communication skills and a proactive, self-starter mindset.
