About the role
Rippling is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Global Expansion Capabilities team — a foundational group powering Rippling’s international products. This team owns the Employer of Record (EOR) platform and the emerging Standard Global Payroll (GP) product, enabling companies to hire and pay employees across dozens of countries without setting up local legal entities.
This is a high-impact leadership role at the intersection of fintech, global compliance, and distributed systems. You will step in following a leadership transition to provide strategic technical direction for a fast-growing, revenue-critical business line, while helping take a new payroll product from early launch into scaled global availability. Your work will directly shape how Rippling expands into new markets and supports customers operating internationally.
What you will do
- Lead a senior, high-performing team: Manage and mentor a San Francisco–based team of senior and staff engineers, while partnering closely with an India-based expansion team responsible for repeatable country launches.
- Own core global expansion platforms: Drive strategy and execution for Rippling’s EOR platform, including third-party payroll integrations, entity management, global billing, and risk-based collateral calculation and collection systems.
- Launch and scale new products: Lead the evolution of Standard Global Payroll from early rollout to broader international expansion, setting the technical foundation for repeatable country launches.
- Architect for reliability and scale: Improve and modernize legacy third-party integration patterns to increase correctness, resiliency, and auditability across complex, multi-jurisdictional environments.
- Translate regulation into software: Partner deeply with Product, Legal, Tax Ops, Finance, and Regulatory teams to convert evolving international labor laws and tax requirements into clear technical roadmaps.
- Set technical direction: Establish architectural standards that reduce rework, prevent technical debt, and support reliable, global payroll and employment workflows.
- Grow the organization: Support thoughtful team growth over time as global payroll adoption expands, while maintaining a high bar for technical excellence and ownership.
What you will need
- Engineering leadership experience: 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a formal engineering management role leading backend-heavy teams through both early-stage and scaled systems.
- Strong backend and systems background: Deep experience with distributed systems, complex data modeling, and business-critical workflows; fintech, payroll, or compliance-driven domains are highly preferred.
- Product and business ownership: A track record of owning a product or platform end-to-end, with accountability for reliability, scalability, and customer impact.
- Cross-functional fluency: Demonstrated ability to partner with non-technical stakeholders (e.g., Legal, Tax, Finance) and translate ambiguous regulatory requirements into executable engineering plans.
- Operational rigor: Experience managing third-party integrations at scale and maintaining high reliability in mission-critical environments.
- Hands-on technical credibility: Sufficient technical depth to engage meaningfully in architecture and design discussions with senior engineers.
- People leadership: Proven success managing senior engineers and collaborating effectively with globally distributed teams.
