Seafoam Materials is developing carbon-storing building insulation made from seaweed and upcycled fibres. We’re building healthier, lower-carbon alternatives to conventional insulation that can help reduce construction emissions, divert waste, and support regenerative supply chains.

We're looking for a curious, hands-on Biomaterials Innovation Associate to join us as one of our first employees and help advance our seaweed-based materials from lab-scale development toward pilot-scale manufacturing.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work directly with founders, scientific advisors, research partners, and industry collaborators at the intersection of biomaterials, climate technology, and startup innovation.

As one of Seafoam's first employees, you'll have the opportunity to help shape not only our technology, but also how we work as a company. The work is collaborative, hands-on, and constantly evolving. We value curiosity, initiative, open communication, and a willingness to tackle challenges that don't come with a playbook.

What You'll Do

• Support biomaterials R&D and prototype development
• Assist with bench-scale iterative prototyping, materials processing & testing, sample preparation, and lab documentation
• Help coordinate activities with research and industry partners
• Contribute to product development, commercialization, marketing, and startup operations
• Help build the systems and processes that enable Seafoam to scale

Who You Are

You may be a senior student, recent graduate, or early-career professional with a background in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, biomaterials, environmental science, or a related field.

We're looking for someone who is:

• Curious and eager to learn
• Organized and detail-oriented
• Comfortable working in a hands-on prototyping, lab-scale and warehouse environment
• Proactive, collaborative, and self-motivated
• Resourceful and comfortable figuring things out when the path isn't obvious
• Passionate about nature-based climate solutions and sustainable materials

Why Join Seafoam?

• Work alongside founders, researchers, manufacturers, builders, and industry partners to help bring a new climate technology from lab-scale development toward real-world deployment.
• Gain experience in biomaterials innovation, product development, and commercialization
• Collaborate with researchers, manufacturers, builders, and industry partners
• Help develop a new generation of carbon-storing building materials

Eligibility

Candidates must be between 15 and 30 years of age, legally entitled to work in Canada, and eligible under the requirements of the funding program supporting this position.
