ABOUT SMARTER ALLOYS
Smarter Alloys is a world leader in shape memory alloy (SMA) innovation, pioneering advanced SMA based materials and devices for medical, cleantech, transportation, and beyond. We are a fast moving, high growth company with a world class technical team based in Cambridge, Ontario. We are looking for a hands-on, mechanically inclined candidate to help design, build, and iterate on our next generation of SMA based devices.
THE ROLE
As our Mechanical Design Engineer, you will turn ideas into hardware. Working closely with our materials science and engineering teams, you will design components, fixtures, and test rigs in CAD, build and test prototypes, and iterate quickly to prove out new devices and manufacturing methods. This is a hands-on role for someone who is as comfortable at a workbench as they are in Fusion 360.
You will move fast, learn constantly, and see your designs go from screen to bench in days, not months. You will be trusted to own your designs end to end, ask good questions, and bring a genuine curiosity about how materials behave in the real world.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Design parts, fixtures, tooling, and test rigs in CAD (Fusion 360, Inventor, or similar), producing clear models and drawings for fabrication
- Build, assemble, and iterate on prototypes; get hands-on with 3D printing, machining, and bench testing
- Translate concepts from the materials and engineering teams into testable hardware, and run experiments to evaluate them
- Work with shape memory alloys and other materials to understand how design choices affect performance and manufacturability
- Document designs, test results, and iterations clearly so the team can build on your work
WHO YOU ARE
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
- 1 to 3 years of experience; strong new grads with solid project or co-op experience are encouraged to apply
- Proficient with CAD tools such as Fusion 360 or Inventor, with a solid grasp of GD&T and design for manufacturing
- Mechanically inclined and hands-on: you like building things and are comfortable with prototyping tools such as 3D printers, hand tools, and basic machining
- Curious about materials and how they behave, with coursework or experience in materials or manufacturing
STRONGEST CANDIDATES WILL ALSO HAVE
- Familiarity with nitinol, shape memory alloys, or other functional and smart materials
- Experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, or machining in a lab or maker environment
- Exposure to tolerance analysis, design for manufacturing, or finite element analysis (FEA)
- Experience with test setup, data collection, and basic statistical analysis
- Any exposure to an ISO 13485 or other regulated, quality-driven environment
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive compensation package with full benefits and paid vacation
- Opportunity to work on novel technology with real commercial impact in growing markets
- Autonomy and ownership: you will own your designs end to end and see them built and tested fast
- Mentorship and room to grow, learning from an experienced, multidisciplinary team
- A collaborative, fast moving team that values initiative and results over process and politics
