Position summary

This is a newly created Nurse Practitioner (NP) position within the Medical Gastrointestinal (GI) site group. The role involves managing patients with various GI cancers, including gastroesophageal, colorectal, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary cancers. The patient population encompasses individuals who are newly diagnosed as well as those undergoing cancer therapy. As part of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre—an academic institution—many patients participate in clinical trials.

The NP will primarily see patients in the outpatient clinic setting. Occasionally, the role may include consulting on hospitalized patients and patients in the outpatient systemic therapy unit to provide clinical expertise and support seamless inpatient-to-outpatient transitions.

The NP will work in parallel with a multidisciplinary team, initially assisting in clinics, with opportunities to independently identify needs or gaps in care that can be managed autonomously over time. The successful candidate will require a level of comfort with ambiguity while establishing role clarity within the site group.

GI outpatient clinics operate daily, with full and half-day clinics each week. Initially, the NP will assist alongside the team in six half-day clinics weekly, with the potential to gradually increase their workload as experience and confidence develop.

Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments & collaboratively develop individualized care plans for new consults & follow-up appointments
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide patient education, psychosocial support & optimize the navigation of patients along the GI cancer journey
  • Aid in screening & recruitment of patients to relevant clinical trials

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Masters degree
  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario Registration in the Extended Class (EC) as a NP (adult) or NP (Primary Health Care)
  • Demonstrated expertise as a Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • (5) years of relevant experience preferred
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in new patient and follow up clinics preferred
  • Experience in nursing research methodology
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Certification in CNA Oncology Nursing preferred
  • Evidence of professional malpractice insurance
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) and other organizations relevant to the role preferred
  • Knowledge of data management programs
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal and customer services skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Excellent decision making, problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Program planning and evaluation methodology skills an asset
