Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Surgical Transformation and Quality, the Surgical Clinical Reviewer will support the Sprott Surgery Department with identifying patients for inclusion in the UHN Quality Improvement Program. As a key member of the Sprott Centre for Quality and Safety, the Surgical Clinical Reviewer will work to understand, analyze, interpret and share information on quality improvement data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) database. This role will also be responsible for supporting quality improvement initiatives as required, and standardizing/optimizing quality assurance efforts across data collection practices for the ACS NSQIP.
Duties
- Collecting preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the program using EPIC
- Applying ACS methodology to enter data into the ACS NSQIP database.
- Complete data analysis and make recommendations, including note on trends, etc. to the quality leadership or other teams in a simple manner (via written or verbal presentations)
- Identifying opportunities for process improvement in data collection processes
- Establishing effective working relationships with relevant members in the hospital community
- Contacting patients and/or families post-operatively for data collection purposes
- Serving as educational resource for on UHN Surgical Quality Improvement Program to internal and external audiences through development of education material and delivering presentations
- Engaging in collaborative learning, evaluation and sharing quality improvement lessons and solutions with networks of colleagues across the province
- Performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Health or Science Related Discipline or recognized equivalent.
- RHIA, RHIT, (RPN) LPN/LVN, RN or BSN
- Graduate of George Brown College Diploma in Health Information Management, or equivalent
- One - two years of related experience in one of the following settings: hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research, or medical records, preferred.
- Experience with ACS NSQIP preferred.
- Successful completion of ACS NSQIP SCR Training/Certification Program
- Clinical chart review and abstraction experience are required.
- Basic statistical knowledge preferred.
- Quality improvement experience preferred.
- Ability to work, build relationships, and gain alignment for clinical support; must be able to articulate questions to receive an appropriate level of support from peers and superiors.
- Ability to perform duties and interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner and produce high-quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance with UHN standards.
- Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work in a self-directed manner.
