Position Summary
The Krembil Brain Institute (KBI) at University Health Network (UHN), a University of Toronto (U of T) teaching hospital, is seeking applicants for the Piyush Kumar and Usha Agarwal Chair in Neurodegenerative Disease Research. The successful candidate currently holds at minimum a Senior Scientist appointment at the Krembil Brain Institute and must already hold, at minimum, Associate Professor faculty status at the University of Toronto within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The term of the Chair position is 5 years.
The Piyush Kumar and Usha Agarwal Chair in Neurodegenerative Disease Research will develop and lead research to explore the fundamental mechanisms of protein misfolding in neurodegeneration and to lead efforts to develop novel therapies. The Chairholder will explore the mechanisms by which proteins, especially Tau and a-synuclein, misfold and aggregate in the brain, as well as how these proteins interact. They will also identify molecular processes that could be targeted using immunotherapy or gene therapy against misfolded or pathogenic proteins to prevent or halt neurodegeneration.
The Chairholder will be encouraged to conduct transdisciplinary research, drawing insights from multiple fields, such as molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, neuroimmunology and systems neuroscience, and to champion neurodegeneration research in Canada and beyond.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties
- The successful applicant has established and will continue to maintain an original, competitive, and independently funded research program of international caliber
- Will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Qualifications
- Candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. in a relevant scientific discipline, as well as significant postdoctoral research experience and an established record of research excellence
- The successful applicant is appointed as a Senior Scientist at the Krembil Brain Institute at UHN
- Candidates are expected to demonstrate evidence of 1) outstanding peer-reviewed publications in leading journals; 2) successful research funding (peer-reviewed grants, fellowships, etc.); 3) presentations at significant conferences; and 4) significant leadership experience in directing a research team
