As an integral member of the Psychiatric Emergency Services Unit team and Urgent Care Clinic, the MENTAL HEALTH CLINICIAN will perform duties across those two services, as well as the Emergency Department at Toronto Western Hospital, including emergency & outpatient urgent care mental health assessments, crisis intervention, and brief psychotherapy. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the principal responsibilities include: providing comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessments; providing therapeutic intervention for individual patients, families on a crisis / short-term basis utilizing a multi-modal perspective; providing education and support to family members around issues related to mental illness/addictions; making referrals to other community and hospital programs; liaising/consulting and collaborating with team members and appropriate community agencies to locate and arrange resources, to obtain, provide or exchange information relative to the patient’s health care; acting as an educational resource for Emergency and Psychiatry staff; performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested; performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Qualifications
- Completion of a Master’s degree in one of the following discipline(s) Social Work; Psychology; Counselling Psychology, or Nursing, with practical and related experience in the provision of psychotherapy services.
- For nurse applicants, Canadian Nursing Association Certificate in Psychiatric/Mental Health nursing preferred
- Registration licensure with an Ontario professional body whose members are authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy (CNO, CRPO, OCSWSSW, CPO, COTO, etc)
- Membership with the Ontario Crisis Workers Association preferred
- Three (3) years current experience working in a mental health setting/environment
- Demonstrated ability to utilize a wide range of treatment modalities
- Proven knowledge of the Mental Health or Addictions continuum of care
- Strong mental health assessment / clinical skills
- Working knowledge of the DSM IV classification system
- Experience working in a crisis unit preferred with the ability to assess urgent or high risk clinical situations and make appropriate interventions
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment an asset
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to document according to professional and organizational standards
- Excellent problem recognition and problem solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Working knowledge of crisis intervention
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and community resources, particularly for psychiatric patients
- Understands psychiatric disorders, individual development and family dynamics
- Ability to function independently within an interdisciplinary team using a collaborative practice model
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Understanding of the impact of culture on health and behaviour required
- Second language (especially Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and Cantonese) an asset
