The Radiation Medicine Program (RMP) is committed personalized cancer care in order to improve patient experience and outcomes. This requires innovation that will drive major changes in practice and the way we deliver care. The Advanced Practice Radiation Therapist (APRT) leads the clinical advancement of radiation therapy practice at UHN, acting as a clinical innovator, educator, researcher, and system-level leader. This role exists to bridge evidence-based science and practice through advanced clinical reasoning, strategic implementation of new technologies, and mentorship of the professional team. The APRT acts as a key architect for seamless patient care, fosters a culture of learning and research, and directly supports organizational and provincial priorities in cancer care transformation.

The Allan and Ruth Kerbel Palliative Radiotherapy and Oligometastases Program (PROP) within RMP provides rapid-access palliative radiotherapy for patients with urgent cancer-related symptoms, aiming to initiate treatment within 24–48 hours of referral. In addition, PROP offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with oligometastatic or limited metastatic disease using stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), a highly precise and high-dose technique designed to eradicate individual metastatic lesions while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

This Advanced Practice Radiation Therapist (APRT) role specializes in advanced palliative radiotherapy and SBRT. With deep expertise in both clinical and technical aspects of radiation therapy, the APRT plays a critical role in delivering rapid, high-quality care for patients with urgent cancer-related symptoms and those with oligometastatic disease. Working closely with the multidisciplinary PROP team, including radiation oncologists, nurse practitioners, radiation therapists, medical physicists, and referral coordinators, the APRT applies in-depth knowledge of clinical assessment, treatment imaging, planning and delivery, and toxicity management to formulate individualized care plans. The APRT also coordinates multidisciplinary care across the PROP and RMP team, ensuring timely access to treatment and seamless transitions between assessment, planning, and delivery. In addition, the APRT monitors and evaluates treatment outcomes to support continuous improvement and the integration of evidence-based practice.

Key responsibilities:

  • Clinical Practice Innovation: Drive evidence-based practice and policy implementation, lead development and evaluation of new radiation therapy techniques, identify gaps in care, and create best-practice workflows to enhance patient outcomes.

  • Education & Staff Development: Act as a subject matter expert, design and deliver tailored educational programs, mentor staff, promote lifelong learning, and evaluate knowledge-to-practice transfer to support professional growth and safe, quality care.

  • Collaboration: Build partnerships within UHN and the academic community, consult with interdisciplinary teams, facilitate inter-professional education initiatives, and represent radiation therapy in committees and communities of practice.

  • Scholarship & Research: Conduct literature reviews, develop innovative educational solutions, engage in research and program evaluation, disseminate findings through scholarly channels, and monitor sustainability of practice and education initiatives.

  • Leadership & Change Management: Provide strategic leadership to advance radiation therapy practice and education, influence policy and decision-making, leverage data analytics, lead committees, and employ change management strategies to implement best practices.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, completion of a masters degree in Radiation Therapy or working towards the master degree or recognized equivalent required.
  • Proven expert clinical skills to perform responsibilities outlined.
  • Advanced knowledge of oncology, biology, physiology and anatomy related to radiation therapy
  • Advanced technical knowledge of Radiation Treatment Planning and Delivery
  • Current registration from the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario required
  • Certification and current membership in the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists required
  • APRT(T) Certification from the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists is preferred. The successful candidate will be required to obtain the APRT Certification within 2 years of beginning this role
  • Eligibility for appointment within an academic setting preferred

  • At minimum Over 6 years up to and including 8 years practical and related experience and/or 1 year on-the-job training required.
