Position Summary:
University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Resource Veterinary Technician in our Animal Resource Centre. The Resource Veterinary Technicians, assists the site supervisor in daily tasks in a fast paced and high demand environment. This position assists with overseeing daily coordination, communication, and operational support for large-animal and rodent research activities. Responsibilities include managing post-operative updates, treatment approvals, and daily husbandry assignments; maintaining treatment sheets and scheduling deliveries. The role performs regular inventory management for site, lab, pharmacy, and surgical supplies, submits orders, and coordinates package receipt and distribution.
The position supports all technical-related tasks, including daily processing and delivering samples. It ensures surgical readiness by preparing and sterilizing packs, maintaining OR equipment, printing records, updating booking calendars, and coordinating animal intake and scheduling (including weekend coverage). Additional duties include administrative tasks such as, discrepancy reporting, government regulated documentation, timesheet updates, and ongoing billing through an internal database. The role also manages communication with veterinary teams and principle investigator and ensures all operational tasks—from maintenance requests to scheduling—are completed accurately and on time. Other technical or administration duties as delegated by the Site Supervisor or Manager.
Duties
Animal Care and Clinical Support
- Update post-operative animal status
- Maintain and update treatment sheets, including daily blood-draw requirements
- Approve incoming animals, create animal maps, and update fasting board as needed
- Assign daily husbandry tasks and weekly scavenge-weighing duties
- Maintain booking calendar daily for rodent anesthetic machine reservations
- Communication with labs for OR bookings, supply sourcing and ordering
- Administrative tasks eg. weekend schedule, check-sheets, and treatment sheets
- Laboratory tasks eg. blood withdrawal including prep, storage and delivery
- Assist with health monitoring program
- Ensure surgical packs are prepared and autoclaved for next-day procedures
- Maintain general functionality and cleanliness of OR equipment and machines
- Clean and restock OR space and/or assign staff to complete
- Maintain anesthetic records, billing, and other documentation
- Operational knowledge and general maintenance of surgical machines eg. xray and fluoro
Inventory, Ordering & Logistics
- Conduct weekly inventory for site and lab space; order supplies as required
- Receive supplies from loading dock and hospital pharmacy
- Submit maintenance requests or schedule service for large machine eg.autoclave, rack washer, laundry machines
Administrative & Scheduling Duties
- Manage ongoing site billing through an internal database
- Update timesheet
- Create surgical technician schedules and regular technician OT schedules
- Update and communicate with vet team and other core departments weekly(or as needed)
- Create and manage online records and other record keeping/documents.
Qualifications
- Completion of a community college program in Veterinary Technology or recognized equivalent
- Registration with Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician, may be obtained after employment
- 3+ years practical and related experience is a must
- Previous experience within a large animal facility
- Previous experience within operation room setting
- Experience handling laboratory animals; both rodents and large animal species
- Remains calm and effective under stress
- Strong crisis-management skills
- Maintains clear judgment in fast-paced situations
- WHMIS training
- Ability to utilize Excel, Word and Outlook at moderate proficiency
- Ability to troubleshoot surgical equipment and monitors
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- No known allergies to animals
- Exercise initiative and time management skills
- Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Exercise good judgement with ability to multi-task
- Compliance with confidentiality requirements
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
- Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies
- Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
