Position Summary

UHN Connect plays a critical role in the fast-paced communication flow at UHN. The Senior Communications Operator is responsible for overseeing and supporting switchboard and communication services within the hospital environment, ensuring efficient daily operations, high-quality customer service, and rapid emergency response coordination. The role includes training and mentoring staff, monitoring call volumes and alarm systems, maintaining on-call and paging databases, supporting quality assurance initiatives, and ensuring compliance with emergency procedures and confidentiality standards. The position also provides backup switchboard coverage, assists with policy and procedure development, and performs administrative and cross-functional duties as required.

Duties

  • Train and support new and existing communications staff, including conducting in-service training and reviewing emergency and disaster response procedures.
  • Monitor daily switchboard operations, call volumes, and service levels while providing backup switchboard, locating, and paging support as needed.
  • Maintain and update switchboard, on-call, and paging databases using termination lists, directory updates, and change requests.
  • Monitor hospital alarm systems and coordinate emergency communication procedures, including testing fire alarms, emergency phones, pagers, and cardiac arrest response systems.
  • Conduct quality assurance activities by monitoring workflow, customer service standards, compliance, and operational efficiency, while resolving work-related issues in collaboration with leadership.
  • Perform administrative and departmental support duties, including policy and procedure documentation, pager maintenance coordination, mail distribution, and after-hours on-call responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • At minimum, completion of Secondary School, or recognized equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • Customer Service or Healthcare environment experience
  • Customer Service training
  • Leadership Courses
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
