Course number and title: EES3000 - Applied Conservation Biology
Course description: Canada has a complex conservation landscape. Through lectures and interactive discussions with leading Canadian conservation practitioners, this course will examine how conservation theory is put into practice in Canada from our international obligations to federal and provincial legislation and policies, and the role of environmental non-government organizations.
The course will emphasize how conservation theory is put into practice in Canada, from its international obligation (Convention on Biological Diversity) to its federal legislation (Species at Risk Act) and policies (Canadian Biodiversity Strategy) to provincial legislation and policies, and the role of environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs). The course will link conservation science theory to policy in Canada through lectures and interactive panel discussions with leading Canadian conservation practitioners. The course will provide the students with an in-depth understanding of the role of science in Canadian conservation policy.
Minimum qualifications: PhD in Conservation Biology, Ecology, or related field. Experience teaching at the university level.
Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching conservation-related courses at the university graduate level. Experience as a professional conservation practitioner in government, industry, or non-profit sector.
Description of duties:
Preparation of lectures and labs, lecturing, creation of exams, term tests and assignments, marking and marks management, supervise TA, and participation in the instructor/course evaluation process by the students.
Course is scheduled on Tuesdays 1 PM - 4 PM

Number of Hours: 0.5 FCE
Sessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between September 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026.
Salary: Starting September 1, 2026 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,997.47 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,699.21 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,699.21 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,953.96 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,953.96 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,228.91 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto.
