About us:

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School, which plays a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $53.3 million in research funding per year, the School contributes to improving population health and health policy and health systems through discoveries and innovation in data science and AI, maternal, child and reproductive health, climate change, implementation and improvement sciences, preventable disease through vaccines and prevention through wellness such as with diabetes, comparative health policy, sustainable and equitable health systems, global and Indigenous health, among many other areas. This past year, $10 million philanthropic dollars was raised for research, education and knowledge translation, and the over 7000 alumni were deeply engaged through events and networking opportunities.

Your opportunity:

The research project is Mino-Bimaadizi – the Ontario Network for Environments in Indigenous Health Research (https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/institutes/wiih/research-initiatives/network-environments-for-indigenous-health-research-neihr-ontario/) is a national research network for ending Indigenous illness and promoting Indigenous mental health and healing. This network’s goal is to end Indigenous mental health problems by using Indigenous knowledges to develop and evaluate health care interventions, service, and policy primarily in Ontario. The purpose of the network is to improve the health outcomes of Indigenous populations by creating a national database of information about successful Indigenous mental health and wellness practices and services in decolonizing mental health system curriculum, program, and policy.

As Indigenous Research Officer, you will be part of a regional team of researchers that focuses on Indigenous mental health while fostering key partnerships and collaborations with Indigenous community partners across the province, nation, and internationally. You will support the research project activities including western data collection, analysis, and knowledge translation within Indigenous knowledges framework. Your excellent project management, analytical, and data management experience will allow for and enhance the development of this project.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating and posting adverts to recruit community partners and study participants
  • Performing mixed methods data analyses including collecting qualitative (narrative interviews) and quantitative data (online surveys)
  • Coordinating study activities including (monitoring study timelines, maintaining a recruitment tracking database with detailed notes, reporting weekly progress)
  • Preparing Research Ethics Board protocol submissions and Data Access Agreements
  • Assisting in the preparation of Indigenous knowledge translation activities (preparing reports, formatting manuscripts, conference presentation materials and stakeholder documents)
  • Scheduling and participating in team meetings, including writing minutes
  • Recording or verifying transactions for the project

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public health, community development, mental health, indigenous studies or related disciplines, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant research work experience, including experience working with Indigenous community partners and applying Indigenous research methodologies, data collection, data management and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating capacity-building, research and knowledge translation projects that require collaboration with diverse project partners
  • Demonstrated project management and research knowledge, experience and methodologies in relation to Indigenous community projects
  • Demonstrated experience working and collaborating with Indigenous leaders, communities, and/or organizations
  • Experience in database management, quality control, qualitative and/or quantitative analysis with an emphasis on Indigenous ethics
  • Experience and proficiency with organizing data, meetings, and minute-taking
  • Experience with assisting with Research Ethics Boards and grant applications
  • Experience with data analysis and management software (nVivo, Qualtrics, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management andproblem-solving skills with the ability to meet conflicting priorities and balance multiple projects
  • Demonstrates initiative and possesses a strong commitment to research work with a strong commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong planning, project management skills with excellent prioritization and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, show initiative and good judgment, and be an effective team member
  • Must have a solid understanding of Indigenous affairs, health, and cultural traditional knowledges
  • Experience working in a culturally-safe Indigenous academic environment
  • Client-services oriented with demonstrated listening and critical thinking skills with the ability to learn new skills
  • Ability to maintain a broad perspective; ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with all levels
  • Ability to travel overnight on occasion to conferences
