Course description: An exploration of some of the most influential works of literature composed over the course of the last three thousand years. The poetry, prose, and drama studied may include such works as Genesis, Homer’s Odyssey, the lyrics of Sappho, Dante’s Inferno, the Islamic Sufi poet Rumi, Cervantes’ Don Quixote, Milton’s Paradise Lost, Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.

Estimated TA support: 1670 TA hours

Estimated course enrollment: 200 students

Class schedule: Mondays 3-5pm IN PERSON

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 – April 30, 2027


Salary (Includes Vacation Pay):
Sessional Lecturer I: $19,994.95
Sessional Lecturer I - Long term: $21,398.43
Sessional Lecturer II: $21,398.43
Sessional Lecturer II- Long term: $21,907.92
Sessional Lecturer III: $21,907.92
Sessional Lecturer III- Long term: $22,457.80

Please note that if the rates stipulated in the collective agreement should vary from the rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: A background in literary study at the graduate level with a PhD in the field is required, as well as a recent and continuing record of academic publication. Demonstrated ability to teach first-year undergraduate students the skills of critical writing and literary analysis.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous teaching or teaching assistant experience with ENG150Y, or a closely equivalent course.

Description of duties:

All duties associated with teaching an Undergraduate Course:

  • Preparation of course outline, course syllabus, and course marking scheme

  • Planning seminar meetings, delivering seminar instructions, developing, marking and administering course assignments

  • Setting and marking tests/exams and course administration in accordance with University of Toronto regulations as described in the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook for Instructors

  • Submission of grades

  • Available and hold regular office hours for academic counselling of students

  • Dealing with student enquiries, appeals and petitions

  • Holding regular office hours and the supervision of any assigned TA support
