The Engineering Career Centre (ECC) connects University of Toronto students with meaningful professional experiences that provide a solid foundation for successful careers and life-long learning. In addition to hosting a wide range of professional development workshops, events and services throughout the year, the ECC team runs two work-integrated learning programs to connect engineering students with a wide range of industry opportunities. Under the general direction of the Business Development Lead, the incumbent is responsible for developing all aspects of targeted new employer relationships. Contributing to a strategic plan that guides new employer development, the incumbent is responsible for conducting market research, identifying target markets, and making first contact with potential employers to develop internship opportunities. Also responsible for maintaining existing relationships where needed. In consultation with the Executive Director, Engineering Career Centre, the incumbent develops and executes business development plan to achieve the performance targets, with the expectation to expand the number and improve quality of approved co-op work term opportunities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting detailed labour market analysis to inform program and partnership development
  • Developing and revising business methods that support employment services activities and objectives
  • Developing communications plans to support departmental objectives
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials
  • Gathering information on student performance from employers
  • Writing reports on site visit findings
  • Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services


Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in a sales or business development role related to business-to-business sales.
  • Experience conducting market research and analysis, identification of target markets and contributing to the design of outreach and business development plans.
  • A track record of success in a target driven environment generating new business and building client relationships in existing and new market sectors required.
  • Highly resourceful and investigative in uncovering co-op and internship opportunities for engineering students.
  • Enthusiastic self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effective to a diverse range of audience.
  • A proactive relationship builder who has demonstrated experience with increasing a client base.
  • Experience working with a CRM or relational database.
  • Excellent report writing and personal accountability skills.
  • Proven relationship management, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service using remarkable interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Proven ability to practice strong professionalism, tact, discretion, initiative, and sound judgment under pressure and stress.
  • Proven ability to organize, prioritize, and produce results in high pressure situations and under tight timelines with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Possess the ability to make decisions that represent the ECC, FASE and the University in a positive and progressive manner.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle.
  • Regular travel required within the GTA and surrounding area meeting clients.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Knowledge of the career services industry and experience within an engineering environment, Co-operative Education, or engineering recruitment will be considered a strong asset.
