Under general supervision, the incumbent operates and maintains a recreational vehicle (RV) for the Office of the Vice-President, Innovation and Research (OVPRI) at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the safe operation, cleanliness, and routine upkeep of the vehicle, and supporting research activities through reliable transportation services. On occasion, the incumbent will be responsible for driving research staff to various on-campus and off-campus locations as required.

Typical Duties

The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of the responsibility involved in this position. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated.

Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.

  • Drives and operates a RV or other G class vehicles.
  • Providing a short training session to new users regarding how to operate the vehicle.
  • Transports users and tools/equipment to various work sites, both on and off campus.
  • Responsible for cleaning interior and exterior of RV regularly.
  • Performs regular routine inspection of interior and exterior and mechanical aspects of vehicle; completes the vehicle maintenance form and submits to supervisor; reports vehicle deficiencies directly to supervisor.
  • Prepares vehicles and equipment for use, and performs routine adjustments such as adding oil, windshield washer fluid, changing a tire in the event of a flat or damaged tire.
  • Loads and unloads equipment onto vehicles, operates lift gate or other lifting devices on RV, ensures materials and equipment are secured safely;
  • Maintains daily records of mileage and submits weekly to supervisor, submits daily fuel receipts to supervisor.
  • Prepares computerized dispatch log daily and ensures accuracy.
  • Receives incoming requests for pickup and delivery on two-way communication system, phone and in person.
  • Acknowledges and logs incoming requests electronically.
  • Plans and coordinates the cost efficient and effective use of the RV, from maintenance and repair to route mapping.
  • Determines priority of pickup and delivery assignments to meet emergency requests and/or unforeseen changes in vehicle or driver availability.
  • Works on campus snow and ice removal details using appropriate vehicles and equipment as it pertains to the RV.
  • Other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements for Selection

Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. WHMIS, and must be able to qualify for Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate upon hiring.

Experience: Three years’ experience driving related vehicles in a customer service environment. Knowledge of University of Toronto Scarborough property is preferred.

Other: A valid Provincial Class "G" driver's licence, physical ability to perform required duties; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written); ability to provide information in a clear and concise manner; able to work in all weather conditions; proficient in Microsoft Excel, good interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy and diplomacy; good judgement and decision making skills; ability to work effectively in a team environment; ability to perform multiple tasks under pressure of constant demands; accuracy and attention to detail.

  • This role has occasional travel and overtime
  • This is a casual position
  • Hours could be 20 hours per week
