General Description of Class


Under general direction performs laboratory animal care and performs technical procedures requiring advanced training, experience and expertise on a regular basis.


Typical Duties:


The following illustrative tasks indicate the level of skill required and the extent of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.


(a) participates in project specific work as requested by investigators or managerial staff;(b) assists in training of staff in technical procedures related to their expertise;
(c) performs multiple technical or surgical procedures at an advanced level of training;
(d) performs duties in the Level 3 containment area;
(e) wears personal protective equipment as appropriate;
(f) performs the duties of a Veterinary Technologist II and;
(g) other related duties as required.


Minimum Requirements for Selection


Education:

Graduate of a veterinary technician/technology diploma program or related university degree in biological/animal/veterinary sciences or equivalent.


Experience:

Three years of related experience with a minimum of two years as a Veterinary Technologist.


Other:

Being a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician through the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science is considered an asset. Physically capable of performing the required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs. No history of animal-related allergies. Must be willing to participate in the University Health and Safety program, which includes the requirement to undergo an immunization program depending on the work environment. Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to take direction and work independently. May be required to be in possession of a valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.
