Course Number and Title: ESTD19H3 - Risk

Course description:

A practical introduction to the concept of 'risk' as utilized in environmental decision-making. Students are introduced to risk analysis and assessment procedures as applied in business, government, and civil society. Three modules take students from relatively simple determinations of risk (e.g., infrastructure flooding) towards more complex, real-world, inclusive considerations (e.g., ecosystem impacts of climate change).

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2027 – April 30, 2027

Salary: Starting September 1, 2026 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,997.48 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,699.22 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,699.22 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,953.96 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,953.96 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,228.90 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto.

Minimum qualifications:

This course is intended as a practical introduction to the concept of as utilized in environmental decision-making. Students are introduced to risk analysis and assessment procedures as applied in business, government, and civil society. Students receive a broad array of inter-related, transferable, problem-solving, assessment, and analytical skills that are centred on assessment methodologies typically associated with climate change (PIEVC, ICLEI, and ISO31000). To be able to teach the course, the candidate must have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of assessment methodologies as we as direct experience in their implementation at either the institutional, local, or regional scale. A PhD is required in a relevant discipline such as Geography, Forestry, Environmental Studies, or Management Science, as well as at least four years of relevant experience.

Description of duties:

Preparation of lectures, leading class discussions, lecturing, creation of exams, term tests and assignments, marking, marks management, supervision of TA(s).
