Description:

Course number and title: CHMB62H3: Introduction to Biochemistry

Course description: This course is designed as an introduction to the molecular structure of living systems. Topics will include the physical and chemical properties of proteins, enzymes, fatty acids, lipids, carbohydrates, metabolism and biosynthesis. Emphasis will be placed on the relationships between the chemical structure and biological function.

Estimated course enrolment: 60

Number of Hours: 0.5 FCE

Sessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between January 1, 2027 and April 30, 2027.

Salary: Starting September 1, 2026 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $9,997.48 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,699.22 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,699.22 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,953.96 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,953.96 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,228.90 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3902 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto.

Minimum qualifications: PhD in Applied Chemistry, or a very closely aligned field (chemistry or biochemistry). Undergraduate degree in Biochemistry Specialist with high performance marks. Performing Teaching Assistant's duties for the Introductory Biochemistry course for at least two years are strongly preferred. Technical and pedagogical competencies in relation to the online delivery of courses would be an asset.

Description of duties: Duties would be to prepare and present lectures, prepare assignments, tests and exams; grade some of these (at least exams); answer student questions in office hours (in person or on-line); collate marks and prepare and submit final grades.


Class schedule: Lectures: Mondays (12 pm - 1 pm)

Tutorial: Thursdays (7 PM - 8 PM)

Term test and exams will be in-person
