About Voltera

Voltera is a rapidly scaling technology company that has been driving change in the additive electronics industry since 2013. Our tools help the world’s most innovative minds solve previously unsolvable problems. Our customers, across the board, are changing the way we think about electronics and its applications.

Our first product, V-One, is a multi-functional PCB printer that enables fast iteration. Product developers and educators benefit from V-One's versatility and rapid prototyping capabilities.

Our second product, NOVA, is a materials dispensing system for flexible hybrid electronics. It was designed to meet the unique demands of novel electronics prototyping and materials research, providing precision dispensing on numerous rigid and flexible substrates.

We’re a tight-knit company looking for ambitious, talented individuals. We value the importance of team culture, and strive to create a work environment where you feel empowered through knowledge, supported by your colleagues, passionate about your work, and motivated to drive the growth of the company.

About the Job

  • Support the design and development of mechatronic subsystems, including gantries, actuators, sensors, and custom mechanical linkages.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate motion components into cohesive product assemblies.
  • Help select components (e.g., motors, bearings, belts, encoders, limit switches) and validate against mechanical and control requirements.
  • Create or support mechanical CAD models, 2D drawings, BOMs, and exploded views for review and manufacturing handoff.
  • Participate in tolerance analysis and DFM/DFA reviews to ensure designs are robust, buildable, and repeatable.
  • Contribute to calibration and alignment strategies to ensure high-precision motion.
  • Work with firmware/software teams to ensure motion capabilities align with control algorithms and user workflows.
  • Document design intent, design changes, and integration details for internal and external use.
  • Occasionally assist with prototyping, assembly, or first article builds as designs transition into production.

Working conditions

Working from the office in Waterloo at least three days per week.

About You

  • Post-secondary education in Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong foundation in mechanical design fundamentals: force analysis, kinematics, mechanical constraints, motion system layout.
  • Hands-on experience working with precision motion components (e.g., linear rails, lead screws, belt drives, stepper/servo systems).
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (e.g., OnShape, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with common sensors and electromechanical interfaces (e.g,. endstops, hall effect sensors, encoders).
  • Basic understanding of how mechanical design choices affect control, calibration, and user experience.
  • Exposure to electrical schematics and PCB layouts is an asset.
  • Strong collaboration and documentation skills to support fast-paced, cross-functional development.

Nice to haves

  • Experience with compact, multi-axis gantry systems or robotic motion platforms.
  • Familiarity with mechatronic design for precision applications (e.g., 3D printing, pick-and-place, CNC).
  • Exposure to injection molding, sheet metal, or machined part design constraints.
  • Basic scripting or programming ability (e.g,. Python or G-code familiarity).
  • Understanding of thermal effects, vibration damping, and mechanical compliance in motion systems.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers or design-for-assembly processes.
  • Interest in working on full-stack electromechanical systems from motion to UI.

Why We’re Awesome

  • We’re a scaling company - you’re hired to have a voice, not to be a cog.
  • Three weeks' vacation to start, plus a paid end-of-year company shutdown.
  • Flexible work hours.
  • Family-friendly work culture.
  • Collaborative work environment.
  • Located in the growing tech hub of Waterloo, Ontario, close to restaurants and easily accessible by public transit.
