About Voltera

Voltera is a rapidly scaling technology company that has been driving change in the additive electronics industry since 2013. Our tools help the world’s most innovative minds solve previously unsolvable problems. Our customers, across the board, are changing the way we think about electronics and its applications.

Our first product, V-One, is a multi-functional PCB printer that enables fast iteration. Product developers and educators benefit from V-One's versatility and rapid prototyping capabilities.

Our second product, NOVA, is a materials dispensing system for flexible hybrid electronics. It was designed to meet the unique demands of novel electronics prototyping and materials research, providing precision dispensing on numerous rigid and flexible substrates.

We’re a tight-knit company looking for ambitious, talented individuals. We value the importance of team culture, and strive to create a work environment where you feel empowered through knowledge, supported by your colleagues, passionate about your work, and motivated to drive the growth of the company.

About the Job

  • Plan and execute laser-material interaction experiments across a variety of substrates (e.g., polymers, copper, FR4, inks, coatings).
  • Develop and refine parameters for ablation processes: fluence, repetition rate, scan strategy, focus height, thermal profiles.
  • Work with high-precision motion and beam delivery systems — especially galvanometer (galvo) scan heads and XYZ gantries.
  • Assist in the integration and tuning of laser modules, optics, and motion components within custom testbeds.
  • Collaborate with firmware and software teams to build test automation and feedback tools for laser diagnostics and alignment.
  • Capture and interpret experimental results using microscopy, profilometry, thermal imaging, and vision systems.
  • Document findings clearly and contribute to internal research reviews, feasibility studies, and design tradeoffs.
  • Help translate R&D insights into system requirements, proof-of-concept demos, and early product features.

Working conditions

Working from the office in Waterloo at least three days per week.

About You

  • Post-secondary education in Mechatronics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees welcome too!
  • Hands-on experience working with lasers, optical systems, or precision mechatronics.
  • Proficient in experimental design, data collection, and analysis — especially in lab environments.
  • Strong understanding of energy delivery, thermal coupling, and how process parameters affect material behavior.
  • Familiarity with Python for experimental scripting, data logging, or device control.
  • Comfort working with motion systems (e.g., linear stages, steppers, servo loops) and alignment procedures.
  • Experience reading datasheets for lasers, optics, motion components, and safety systems.

Nice to haves

  • Experience with laser ablation, laser drilling, microetching, or other subtractive laser processes.
  • Familiarity with galvo scanning systems, scan field distortion, F-theta lenses, and path planning.
  • Knowledge of material removal strategies for conductive films, resists, cured inks, or FR4.
  • Experience tuning pulse parameters for ultrafast or pulsed lasers (ns/fs/ps).
  • Exposure to laser safety standards and interlock system design.
  • Background in lab automation or test sequencing using Python or LabVIEW.
  • Experience evaluating ablation using SEM, confocal, white-light interferometry, or similar tools.

Why We’re Awesome

  • We’re a scaling company - you’re hired to have a voice, not to be a cog.
  • Three weeks' vacation to start, plus a paid end-of-year company shutdown.
  • Flexible work hours.
  • Family-friendly work culture.
  • Collaborative work environment.
  • Located in the growing tech hub of Waterloo, Ontario, close to restaurants and easily accessible by public transit.

If this sounds like a good fit, reach out! We’d love to hear from you.
